Solar System for Kids: Fun Facts & Activities
The Solar System is like a big space family! At the center is the Sun, a huge, hot ball of fire that gives light, warmth, and energy. All the planets, moons, and even tiny asteroids move around the Sun.
Our Solar System lives in a galaxy called the Milky Way, which is full of stars, planets, and other exciting things. Today, we are going to visit all the planets and learn fun facts about them!
Mercury
Mercury is the smallest planet in our Solar System and closest to the Sun. Its surface is covered with craters and rocky plains, like a giant moon. Mercury is gray and looks like a tiny, shiny ball in space.
Science concept
Mercury has extreme temperatures - scorching hot during the day and freezing cold at night because it has almost no atmosphere to trap heat.

Fun fact
Mercury is the fastest planet, zipping around the Sun in just 88 Earth days!

Parent tip
Show your child a flashlight and a small ball to explain day and night. Spin the ball slowly to demonstrate how one side is heated by the Sun while the other side is cold.
Draw Mercury and color red for the hot daytime side and blue for the freezing nighttime side. Ask: “Which side would you like to visit?”
